Skill: Finding the home note in F, one flat

We've learned how to find the home note from the key signature in most keys, those with sharps and those with multiple flats. That leaves 2 keys remaining that we essentially have to memorize. One of them is when there is only one flat in the key signature. This is the key of F. How do you find F? If you read music to the point of knowing where F is in all the staffs, that's a good thing. But if not, here is where we need to learn a little of that. The bass clef is an F clef; it's designed to show you where F is on the staff. Notice that the fat part of the curve and the two dots both center on the second line from the top of the staff. A note on that line is F. When there is only one flat in the key signature, that line is the home note. If you see only one flat, think 'F', and find it from the clef sign.
